![]() When using the x264vfw codec (linked above) with VirtualDub to encode video as x264, follow these steps. Choose a location and filename for the output video.Click the "File" menu item, then "Save as AVI.".Click the "OK" button in the "Select video compression" dialog box.Click the "OK" button in the "Xvid Configuration" dialog box.In that case, we recommend using a higher quantizer value. But for longer videos (e.g., longer than a minute or two), may produce excessively large file sizes. Note that a quantizer of 1.00 is essentially equivalent to zero compression. Choose "1.00" for "Target quantizer:" (If the button says "Target bitrate (kbps):" click it to change it to "Target quantizer:").If this is not in the list, use this link to download and install Xvid. Select "Xvid MPEG-4 Codec" in the list of codecs. ![]() Click "Video" then "Compression" in the menu.If it is not an avi file, use MP4Cam2AVI Easy Converter (mentioned above) to convert to AVI. When using the Xvid codec (linked above) with VirtualDub to encode video as Xvid, follow these steps. You should probably also set "audio format:" to "Source audio (no recompression)". If MP4Cam2AVI hangs when you select the mp4 file, turn off Preview before selecting the input file. If you have video encoded as H.264 and in mp4 file format, you can use MP4Cam2AVI Easy Converter to convert it to avi format, then use VirtualDub to encode. If you don't already have a video encoder which works with the XviD codec, VirtualDub seems to work well. Xvid and x264 alongside ffdshow-tryouts appeared to offer the best free solution for quality and performance. We at NBS have tried a few different codecs. 7 GraphEdit for DirectShow codec use inspection.6 Uninstall LAV Splitter and/or Haali Media Splitter. What I don't know is if it retains this superiority to the new QuickTime X. For the longest time it was still streets ahead in terms of flexibility, capabilities, and design when compared to QuickTime, so perhaps it didn't matter. It's still deprecated, and there still isn't a real successor. Indeed, it's been deprecated even before MF became available. MS has been positioning DS as deprecated for a long time. For what it does, MF is a crap fit and really not an option.Which is absurd in itself. the same amount of time/effort yields more rewards in DS than MF.VirtualDub should be using DirectShow instead of frigging VFW, but it is not two generations behind. IMO it's also meaningfully more complex and harder to understand Windows 7 adds some new convenience APIs to try to cover up this complexity, but I still think the MF learning curve is flatter than the DS one i.e. Windows 7 adds some support for capture devices (UVC 1.1 video, and audio) but it's still deficient in this area relative to its supposed "predecessor". Its ASF support was also deficient relative to the (dumb) Format SDK. It did not support audio capture, it did not support video capture, it did not support audio or video editing, it did not support DVD playback, it did not support TV playback, it did not provide stream buffering. ![]() MF's raison d'etre is protected content (whoopty fuck, pardon me if I don't rank that as a significant feature). However, the version in Vista was totally deficient. But currently the functionality of DS is ahead of MF in many areas, not to mention the issue of codec availability (the number of third-party MF codecs is negligible). ![]() I suspect MF still isn't really a replacement for DirectShow.Yes, I know that's how they kind of push it. It's kind of amazing that VFW works at all - hard pressed to find a similar example on any other platform. Vista and Win7 are primarily built around Media Foundation, the successor to DirectShow. DirectShow (replacement for VFW) is 12 years old. ![]()
